| doky | | THANKS TO THE GUY IN 4UM OF BJORK.COM FOR TRANSLATE TO US! DOKAKA: Yeah, I went to the Fuji Rock festival sometime. It was really incredible when the typhoon hit for the first time. ---I went once too, the time when Bjork and Beck were there. DOKAKA: Indeed. ---I remember the metal, rock and jazz, but if I remember correctly, I’ve said before that I really liked the Italian Progressive. DOKAKA: Yeah, I love “area.” Yes, that area’s vocalist’s were an inspiration (??). ---Honestly, I haven’t heard of “area,” but I will listen after this. DOKAKA: Really? Definitely. ---I’ve heard your Bjork recording where Mike Patton contributed, but did you perform together in the studio? DOKAKA: We weren’t together when I recorded, but I came to fiddle around in the studio a few days later, and we worked together then. ---What kind of recording was it? DOKAKA: Well, it was like...I did the mouth drum and mouth bass first, and from there, the musicians played. ---So you formed the founding parts of the song. DOKAKA: Yeah, I did things like the rhythm part. ---When you recorded, what kind of things did Bjork discuss with you? DOKAKA: Um...she told me (kindly) she liked the Slayer song I made. and then she told me about the potential for various songs. Then, honestly, I put a week in my schedule to finish up, but I almost finished in one take quickly, within a three day allotment, so she called me a “one-take man” (laughs). ---In those three days, what was the overall time spent? DOKAKA: Since it was about three hours a day, I suppose it was about 9 hours total. ---It was almost one take...you handled a fairly difficult pattern immediately? DOKAKA: Yeah, I think I was able to do it because there wasn’t a difficult song. My girlfriend gave me an “okay” sign, so I was like “oh, this is alright.” ---What was Mr. Dokaka’s instruction like? Bjork showed first with her mouth “it’s like this,” et cetera, in that way? DOKAKA: She played the initial part of the song, and when I first heard it, I would sing the drum and bass parts, and my girlfriend was the image of support but, “it was almost right,” it was like that. So, it was this way, not much else. ---It wasn’t just that you replaced [preexistent sounds] with your mouth, Mr. Dokaka’s originality was there too. Was it like that? DOKAKA: Yeah, I was almost, always challenged, and I succeeded, so I was lucky to have done it. ---Was it different than the try, try again work when you are alone? DOKAKA: I suppose. Working alone is really sad now. (laughs) ---It seems like it would be fun not having to worry about pushing buttons and things. DOKAKA: Yeah. Um, yes, that’s true. I originally liked recording and things, so it was fun, I think. ---About how many recordings/songs did you make? DOKAKA: Um...I think it was six. ---She probably used a lot of base material on you then, huh? DOKAKA: Yeah, a lot of changes were made here and there, so I don’t think I was used so much. ---It seems like she maybe had more chemistry with Matmos. (laughs) DOKAKA: Haha, honestly, those guys came into the studio to play with me as well, so they were nice guys. ---You didn’t record together, but it seems like you communicated relatively quickly. DOKAKA: There wasn’t that much time like that, but we talked when we had time and things, like that. ---Weren’t there any problems with communicating in English? DOKAKA: Yeah, there were. (laughs) ---How did you come to stay in New York? DOKAKA: Um, before I went to New York I went to Texas, and during that time I was contacted by [e-]mail. So I published in my homepage that wouldn’t it be good to travel to New York, if I came, wouldn’t I make a recording, I would like to see it, like that. ---It would be good if you received an offer to stay there again. DOKAKA: Yeah. In any case, it is another surprise. (laughs) ---Is Bjork staying in contact with you and such? Like, to tour together and stuff? DOKAKA: Yeah, there was an offer like that. So... ---Yes? DOKAKA: But I don’t know specifics. I don’t know if I will go or what. ---I heard she was singing at the Athens Olympics or something. It would be interesting if you came, I think. DOKAKA: That would be alright. (laughs) ---Is your body a strong type? Or a weak type? DOKAKA: I’m told that I am strong, but I don’t know. | | |
